Qualifications

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to new Honors Program students throughout the academic year.
  • Support students during transition to university life and residence halls.
  • Assist with events and orientation activities to welcome students and promote participation.
  • Identify students needing help and develop plans of support with Program Director.
  • Refer students to appropriate offices for further help.
  • Help plan and deliver awareness events addressing housing, stress, and safety.
  • Meet mentees weekly for campus activities, lunch, or approved engagements.
  • Encourage mentees to stay engaged and complete the Honors Program.

Job Summary

The Honors Program Student Mentor is a Title III-funded student leadership position designed to foster student success, engagement, retention, and academic excellence among Honors students. Student mentors serve as peer leaders by providing guidance, encouragement, and support to new and continuing Honors Program students while promoting involvement in the Honors Program and university community.

As part of their employment responsibilities, Student Mentors are also required to complete scheduled weekly office hours in the Honors Program Office, providing general administrative support and assisting with daily office operations.

Responsibilities
  • Provide advice and guidance to students who are new to the Honors Program on a wide range of issues throughout the academic year.
  • Actively support students during their transition to university life and residence halls.
  • Assist with a variety of activities (e.g., General Assembly, new student orientations, and information sessions) to welcome students to the Honors Program and inform prospective and current students about the benefits of participation.
  • Identify students who may be experiencing difficulties and, in consultation with the Program Director and Coordinator, help develop an appropriate plan of support.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of university departments and campus resources and refer students to appropriate offices for additional assistance.
  • Assist in planning and delivering awareness events and educational activities that address issues affecting students, such as housing, exam stress, and personal safety.
  • Motivate and encourage mentees to remain engaged in and successfully complete the Honors Program.
  • Provide one-on-one support to mentees by meeting with them weekly for a campus activity, lunch, or another approved engagement opportunity.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of mentees by sharing ideas and encouraging meaningful engagement with the Honors Program and campus community.
  • Attend monthly team meetings.
  • Complete all required training as directed by the Program Director.
  • Assist mentees with developing résumés, obtaining professional headshots, and preparing scholarship application videos.
  • Attend campus events with mentees to promote the Honors Program and encourage student engagement.
  • Complete required weekly office hours in the Honors Program Office, providing general administrative and office support as assigned.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student information and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
