Student Laboratory Assistant

Location: Athens, GA. Position summary: The Shamblin lab seeks laboratory assistants for wildlife and fisheries sample processing and DNA extractions for population genetic analyses.

This position will assist graduate students and the lab manager with sample tracking, processing of blood, eggshell, skin, fin clips, and swab samples, and DNA extractions for genotyping and sequencing for fish and wildlife species of conservation concern. The position also assists in sample archiving and general laboratory maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Sample tracking and processing for DNA extractions – 50% of time
• DNA extractions and sample archiving – 35% of time
• Dish washing and general lab maintenance – 15% of time

Minimum Qualifications

• Pursuing a BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries
• Previous laboratory experience is a plus, but not necessary

Preferred Characteristics

• Independently or in group work
• Attention to detail
• Good organizational and interpersonal skills

Physical Demands

This position is laboratory based. Candidates should be able to sit or stand at the bench for extended periods. The position may occasionally require lifting boxes up to 40 pounds.
