Job summary

The Shamblin lab at The University of Georgia is seeking a Conservation Genetics Student Lab Assistant to support wildlife and fisheries sample curation, DNA extractions, and data calling for population genetic analyses.

The role assists graduate students, the lab manager, and the PI with handling blood, eggshell, feather, skin, fin clips, eDNA, and swab samples; prior lab experience is valued but not required, and a minimum 10-hour weekly commitment is preferred.

Qualifications

  • UGA students pursuing BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries preferred. Previous laboratory experience is a plus, but not necessary.

Position Summary:

The Shamblin lab seeks student laboratory assistants for wildlife and fisheries sample curation and processing, DNA extractions, and data calling for population genetic analyses. This position will assist graduate students, the lab manager, and PI with sample tracking, processing of blood, eggshell, feather, skin, fin clips, eDNA filter, and swab samples, and DNA extractions for genotyping and sequencing for fish and wildlife species to inform conservation and management. This position will also assist the PI with data calling with microsatellite and sequencing projects. Sample archiving and general laboratory maintenance are expected. Candidates available for a minimum of 10 hours weekly are preferred.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

UGA students pursuing BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries preferred. Previous laboratory experience is a plus, but not necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Ideal candidates work well independently or in groups. Attention to detail is critical, despite repetitious tasks. Good organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.

Physical Demands:

This position is primarily laboratory based. Candidates should be able to sit or stand at the bench for extended periods. This position may occasionally require lifting boxes up to 40 pounds.
