Job summary

Lake Huron Medical Center, part of Prime Healthcare, is seeking a Student Extern to assist the patient care team per diem. The extern works under an RN, starting as a nursing assistant level, with potential advancement after supervisor clearance. Eligible students have completed the first nursing semester and maintain good academic standing.

Required BLS certification; CNA preferred. Shifts are variable in a per diem arrangement, contributing to a flexible learning environment in a community

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a nursing program and have completed at least the first semester.
• Maintain good academic standing throughout the program.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
• Assist with daily nursing care and activities per established protocols.
• Move to appropriate skill level after supervisor clearance.
• Support the patient care team in a per diem shift environment.

Responsibilities

The Student Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team. The extern performs at the level that has successfully been completed and passed in the clinical section at a local college. Under the general supervision of an RN the extern provides direct patient care in accordance with the established protocols, the skills they are able to perform are expanded. All newly hired externs will first function in the capacity of a nursing assistant, regardless of their nursing program clinical level. When the student has been cleared by the Supervisor, they may be moved to their appropriate skill level.
