Program Summary

The https://csumb.edu/service/service-leadership-students/csumb-college-corps/ is part of a statewide initiative to support the next generation of leaders while reducing the cost of college for low to modest income students and students of color. Our goal is to develop, mentor, train, and inspire future transformative community leaders through a year of service and mentorship. This program will support 60 -70 College Corps Fellows who will contribute 450 hours over an academic year in exchange for $10,000 in educational support. Most Fellows will work in K12 settings to support youth in civic engagement, academic support, and social emotional growth. Building on the https://csumb.edu/service/mission-philosophy-goals/ at CSUMB, the College Corps program seeks to develop future community leaders who: understand their own identities; act with compassion and cultural competence; analyze complex social issues; and develop the collaborative skills to work toward equity.

Position Summary

Under the supervision and direction of the College Corps Principal Investigator, the Student Experience and Leadership Programs Specialist works alongside the College Corps Principal Investigator to co-facilitate the Service Learning Student Leadership Program.

Key Responsibilities

Mentorship and Support

• Provide individual or group mentorship to first-year College Corps Fellows and ~15 Service Learning Student Leaders and College Corps Pod Leaders through individual and group meetings.
• Mentor cohort in peer support skills, including active listening, time management, social justice/principled leadership, and troubleshooting issues as they may arise.

Training And Weekly Meetings

• Facilitate/co-facilitate weekly program meetings (e.g., leading reflections and facilitating dialogues about critical community issues) with special attention to team building between College Corps Pod Leaders and Service Learning Student Leaders.

Recruitment And Recognition

• Coordinate with community partners and student leaders to improve infrastructure, training, mentoring, procedures, onboarding, and recognition of service learners and College Corps Fellows.

Administrative Duties

• Coordinate time sheets and mileage reimbursements to ensure timely submission, including the Service Learning Student Leaders and College Corps Fellows. Approve College Corps timesheet completion using AmericaLearns system.
• Support Recruitment and Retention Specialist with coordination of the documentation of files of all correspondence, reports, procedures, and presentations related to the College Corps program.

Contribute To Service Learning Institute

• Collaborate with Service Learning Institute activities and programs by attending staff meetings, participating in outreach events, and contributing to the programs of the Institute.

Qualifications

Education And Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four year college or university.
• Professional experience with first-generation, low-income youth and/or college students.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with a variety of constituencies including K12 community partners, faculty, and college personnel.
• Proven experience with service learning, experiential education, and/or civic engagement.
• A working knowledge of best practices in student-oriented success and mentorship.
• Experience and knowledge of success practices with undocumented students and AB540 eligible students.
• Experience in program development, program evaluation, grants management.
• An understanding and analysis of challenges that impact first-generation college students and low-income students and how to develop leadership potential.
• Experience in planning and facilitation training for students, staff, faculty and/or community partners.
• Ability to work collaboratively with educators and administrators in K12 settings, community partners in nonprofits, faculty, and university partners.
• Strong leadership, teambuilding, and group facilitation skills.
• Skills in recruitment, social media, and outreach.
• Skills in event planning, storytelling, use of creative arts in reflection.
• Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills utilizing tact and diplomacy.
• Demonstrated ability to increase representation, voice, and equitable treatment of underrepresented student, staff, faculty, and/or community groups and to advance the university goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
