Job description

Student Electronics Technician

Position Summary: The Student Electronics Technician will assist in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of AVL (Automated Vehicle Location), video surveillance, and communication systems on UGA buses and transit vehicles. The position supports the daily technical operations by helping to ensure equipment is functional, accurate, and properly documented. Work is hands‑on and may involve time in the shop and in the field.

All individuals selected for this position are required to undergo drug and alcohol testing in accordance with US Department of Transportation regulations.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assist with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AVL, video, and radio equipment.
  • Perform equipment testing and diagnostics using multimeters, laptops, and related tools.
  • Document work performed and maintain accurate logs and inventory records.
  • Drive university vehicles to transport tools or test equipment and systems.
  • Assist with shop organization, labeling, and minor repairs or prep work.
Relevant / Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification
  • Enrollment in electronics, engineering, computer science, or related technical field.
  • Basic understanding of electronics principles and tools.
  • Previous experience with wiring, soldering, or working on vehicle systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Windows‑based programs and hardware setup/troubleshooting.
Physical Demands
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in tight or elevated spaces on buses and in maintenance areas.
  • Use hand tools and electronic testing equipment.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Driving as needed for job duties.
  • Have minimum 5 hours work availability during morning hours per week.
