Position Overview
The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) is looking for a creative-minded student assistant for its new Communications Specialist position. A successful candidate will support the work of the communications manager by creating digital and print materials for fliers and social media, making updates to our website, and editing content for various communications purposes in alignment with the OFA and KU brand.
This position will require skills in graphic design, photography, videography and writing. The applicant should be detail oriented, a quick learner, and able to manage numerous tasks at once using strong organization skills. Punctuality and responsibility are expected.
The Office of Faculty Affairs supports faculty and faculty leadership in the development of an exceptional learning community at the University of Kansas. We do this work through leading initiatives and providing guidance in the areas of faculty advancement and recognition, faculty relations and policy, and faculty development and growth. Through communications, we not only support faculty by communicating important and timely information to them, but also by elevating their stories and accomplishments to a broader audience.
Job Description
70% Social Media and Event Support
- Check in regularly with communications manager on social media content plan and status of projects.
- Design promotional materials and assets for items such as presentations, event invitations and programs, social media graphics, web imagery, and flyers, using Adobe Creative Suite.
- Take photos and video at Faculty Affairs events and for other promotional purposes. Edit photos and videos based on project needs.
25% Website Content Maintenance
- Make updates to the Office of Faculty Affairs website through KU CMS-Sunflower and under the communications manager's direction.
- Complete CMS trainings and stay up to date on KU CMS knowledge.
5% Perform other communications tasks as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Current KU student majoring in design, journalism, film, photography, public relations, or a related field and enrolled in 6 or more credit hours.
- Experience working with the Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator as demonstrated by application materials.
- Experience with photography, videography and/or media production, as demonstrated by coursework or previous work experience.
- The student must have availability to work 10 hours during the work week, with occasional evening availability (once per month). Occasional remote work is a possibility. This position will work during the academic year (fall/spring) with optional summer hours. Availability over academic breaks is not required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience creating online content for website, social media and electronic newsletters.
- Understanding of digital accessibility best practices.
- Website content management experience (e.g., Drupal, Word Press, HTML, CSS, Java Script, etc.).
- Advanced writing and proofreading skills (e.g., social media, newsletter, etc.) as demonstrated in application materials.
- Photography and photo editing skills as demonstrated in application materials.
- Basic videography and video editing skills as demonstrated in application materials.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
