Job summary

SAE Institute North America in Chicago is seeking a Student Advisor to support student success on campus. You will advise students, monitor attendance, and partner with the Registrar to assist SAP progress, while advocating for student retention.

This full-time, on-site role requires coordinating with campus staff, assisting with orientation and student events, and guiding students through academic planning and re-entry processes. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or higher and two years of experience in a higher education environment with a student advising function.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of academic student record keeping in higher education.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies and collaborate across the organization.
  • Demonstrates initiative and adaptability in a changing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Track student attendance and contact absent students after two consecutive days of non-attendance.
  • Monitor high risk students and provide academic support and planning.
  • Meet regularly with the Student Success Manager or Campus Director of Education.
  • Coordinate with staff to review student progress and support SAP processes.
  • Assist with academic coaching and individual action plans for students.
  • Support re-entry and SAP appeal processes.
  • Assist with planning and execution of student events, orientations, and clubs.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership to improve student services.
  • Comply with SAE policies and procedures.

Job description

The Student Advisor reports directly to the Student Success Manager or Campus Director of Education if no Student Success Manager. The Student Advisor is primarily responsible for advising students, creating opportunities for student engagement and enhancement, and providing customer service to the student body. Monitors attendance and works with Registrar to assist in the notification and advising of students not making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Is a strong advocate of student retention. This is an on-campus position.

Student Advisor Duties And Responsibilities
  • Track student attendance and contact absent students after two consecutive days of non-attendance, and document contact activities.
  • Monitor high risk students and contact students to assist with academic needs.
  • Meet regularly with Student Success Manager or Campus Director of Education if no
  • Student Success Manager and other appropriate staff to review student progress.
  • Facilitate student success with academic coaching and creating individual action plans for students to keep them on track academically.
  • Assist returning students through re-enter process.
  • Monitoring and advising students currently on academic warning/probation or who are potential academic warning/probation students.
  • Working to assist students through the SAP Appeal process.
  • Complying with all SAE policy and procedures.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of student events, including Orientation, Re-Entry Orientation, and Graduation.
  • Assist with student engagement activities, including campus clubs, as assigned by the Student Success Manager Campus Director of Education if no Student Success Manager.
  • Facilitate student success with academic skill coaching.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership to facilitate and improve services to students.
  • Other duties as required.
Student Advisor Essential Skills, Knowledge And Experience
  • Associates Degree or Higher and two years of experience in a higher education environment with a student advising function.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally (in one-on-one and group settings) and in writing.
  • Knowledge of academic student record keeping in a setting of higher education.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies, individually and as a group.
  • Communicates effectively with people at all levels in the organization.
  • Remains productive during periods of change. Taking the initiative to mitigate challenges and obstacles as needed; being action oriented.
  • Works collaboratively with people throughout the organization.
  • Continuously look for ways to simplify and improve work processes to achieve better results.
Desirable Skills
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Candidate must have working knowledge of student database system, student learning management system, and Microsoft Office Suite products
Additional Information

This is a full time campus, on-site based position. Work Schedule requirements require Two weekday evenings until 7:00p.m. Schedule to be approved by Director of Education and Dean of Education and Career Services. Hourly rate $24 to $26. This is benefit eligible position. Summary of benefits can be found in SAE's careers website.

Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper, occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials. Moving from place to place within the organization, minimal reaching for items above and below desk level. Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
