Structural Field Inspection Manager - Licensed PE

Location: Raleigh, NC, Charlotte, NC, or Charleston, SC

Job Type: Full-time

Role Summary

We are seeking a Structural Field Inspection Manager - Licensed PE to strengthen and elevate our Field Services department. This leader will supervise production staff, build a robust review and oversight process, and drive standardized procedures across offices. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, a commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to mentor teams while serving as a trusted client partner.

A critical part of this role includes reviewing and sealing field reports prepared by themselves and the production staff, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable codes and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities
Supervisory Leadership
  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance management for field services production staff.
  • Build a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Support team development through training plans, technical feedback, and clear expectations.
Technical Review, Oversight & Sealing
  • Review, approve, and seal field reports, inspection documentation, and testing records prepared by production staff and by the PE, consistent with state board rules and internal quality standards.
  • Provide clear technical direction when deficiencies, risks, or nonconforming conditions are identified.
  • Ensure deliverables align with applicable codes, standards, and client scope.
SOP Development & Implementation
  • Lead the creation and rollout of standardized field service procedures across offices, including:
  • Reporting formats
  • Safety protocols
  • Documentation standards
  • Drive adoption and provide training to ensure consistent field execution.
Quality Assurance & Audits
  • Conduct periodic audits of field activities and documentation to ensure adherence to SOPs and industry standards.
  • Track trends, implement corrective actions, and improve report quality and turnaround times.
Technology Assessment
  • Evaluate current field data collection and reporting tools.
  • Recommend improvements or replacements and oversee implementation, training, and adoption.
Client Engagement
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for field service projects including:
  • Bidding and scoping
  • Project setup
  • Post-project follow-up and satisfaction checks
  • Represent the department with professionalism and urgency.
Cross-Functional Technical Support
  • Collaborate with structural, architectural, or other engineering teams to connect field findings to design intent and risk mitigation.
  • May assist with field verification and coordination tied to structural plans where applicable to project scope and licensure requirements.
Performance Objectives (Aligned to First-Year Success)
  • Within 3 months: Assume direct supervisory authority over field services production staff, ensuring accountability and professional development.
  • Review protocols: Establish a systematic review process for field reports, inspections, and testing documentation across all offices.
  • By month 6: Lead creation of standardized field service procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Technology: Review current tools, document recommendations, and oversee implementation.
  • Client engagement: Own end-to-end client experience for field service projects.
  • Quality assurance: Implement periodic audits to ensure SOP and industry standard adherence.
Growth Path

This role is designed to evolve into a Branch Department Manager position, with potential progression to a Regional Department Manager overseeing multiple offices.

Required Qualifications
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in NC (SC for the Charleston Office) or ability to obtain through reciprocity within a reasonable timeframe.
  • 5+ years of experience in field services, inspections, CMT, structural assessments, or related engineering services.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing technical deliverables and implementing quality controls.
  • Prior people leadership experience or strong readiness to step into a formal supervisory role.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and safety requirements.
  • Strong written communication with the ability to produce and/or oversee clear, defensible, client-ready reports.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with modern field data collection platforms and report automation workflows.
  • Background in structural engineering support, field verification, and condition assessment.
  • Experience with CMT/Special Inspections
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role includes a mix of office and field time.

  • Ability to visit active job sites and safely navigate uneven terrain, ladders, or confined areas as required by project scope.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry equipment up to 50lbs.
