Job summary

GPI is seeking an Entry-Level Bridge Engineer in Boston to contribute to design, inspection, and rehabilitation of bridges and transportation structures. You will work with experienced engineers on analysis, load ratings, and field inspections, while developing plans, calculations, and project management skills.

We expect a Civil Engineering degree (ABET-accredited) and an EIT or ability to obtain within a year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural or transportation focus (ABET-accredited).
• EIT certification preferred or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
• Internship or co‑op in structural, bridge, or transportation engineering is a plus.
• Basic understanding of structural analysis and bridge design principles.
• Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD and transportation standards preferred.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenBridge, LEAP Bridge, SAP2000 or similar software is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
• Willingness to perform field inspections including ladders and uneven terrain.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

• Assist in the structural analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other transportation‑related structures.
• Perform engineering calculations and develop design plans, specifications, and construction documents under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Support bridge inspections and condition assessments in accordance with state and federal requirements.
• Participate in field investigations, data collection, and construction site visits.
• Assist with load ratings, rehabilitation studies, and bridge replacement projects.
• Utilize engineering software to prepare designs, models, and technical reports.
• Coordinate with project managers, clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
• Review shop drawings, construction submittals, and inspection reports.
• Support the preparation of permit applications and engineering studies.
• Maintain project documentation and assist with schedule and budget tracking.
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, design standards, and quality control procedures.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural or transportation focus from an ABET-accredited program.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire preferred.
• Internship or co‑op experience in structural, bridge, or transportation engineering is a plus.
• Basic understanding of structural analysis and bridge design principles.
• Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and transportation engineering standards preferred.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenBridge, LEAP Bridge, SAP2000, or similar engineering software is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
• Willingness to perform field inspections, including climbing ladders, walking uneven terrain, and working near active traffic.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Coursework or experience in structural analysis, steel design, reinforced concrete design, and bridge engineering.
• Familiarity with DOT standards and transportation infrastructure projects.
• Desire to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Requirements

• Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
• Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
• Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
• Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
• Able to climb and leave a ladder to a platform varying from 6' to 20'
• Able to wear and operate personal fall arresting apparatus, and work at a height of 6' or higher
• Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
• Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
