Job summary

GPI is seeking an Entry-Level Traffic Engineer in Boston to join our transportation team. You will assist in traffic studies, safety analyses, signal design, and multimodal projects while gaining mentorship and hands-on experience on meaningful infrastructure programs.

Ideal candidates hold a Civil/Transportation Eng degree (ABET-accredited) with EIT eligibility or certification within a year, plus internships or co-ops in transportation or traffic engineering.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within one year.
• Internship or co-op experience in transportation or traffic engineering is a plus.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Synchro, HCS, VISSIM or similar software.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with traffic impact studies, traffic operations analyses, and transportation planning projects.
• Collect, review, and analyze traffic data including counts, speed studies, and crash data.
• Support design and evaluation of traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, and roadway safety improvements.
• Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, and project documentation.
• Assist with traffic modeling and simulation using industry-standard software.
• Participate in field investigations and site visits to evaluate traffic conditions.
• Support roadway, intersection, and multimodal improvement projects.
• Coordinate with engineers, planners, clients, municipalities, and transportation agencies.
• Assist with permit applications and regulatory submissions.
• Review plans and specifications to ensure compliance with standards.

• Support construction‑phase activities, including responding to field questions and reviewing traffic control plans.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited university.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year preferred.
• Internship or co-op experience in transportation or traffic engineering is a plus.
• Basic understanding of traffic engineering and transportation planning principles.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, or similar software is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Willingness to perform occasional fieldwork and site visits.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Coursework in traffic engineering, transportation planning, highway design, or traffic operations.
• Familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO guidelines, and DOT standards.
• Experience using traffic analysis and simulation software.
• Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and long-term growth in transportation engineering.

Requirements

• Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
• Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
• Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
• Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
• Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
