Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Structural Intern to join our Walnut Creek or Oakland office. This entry-level, temporary role supports project teams in civil engineering tasks, including planning, design, and plan production for site development and infrastructure projects.

The intern will learn core MN tools and workflows under direct supervision, with orientation and periodic check-ins, contributing to drawings, data, and basic analyses while developing foundational civil engineering skills.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in Civil Engineering; junior standing or above preferred.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 preferred.
• Basic understanding of civil engineering fundamentals, including grading, drainage, stormwater, utilities, and site layout.
• Exposure to AutoCAD; learning MicroStation or Civil 3D.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• Sound analytical and problem-solving skills applied to well-defined tasks.
• Clear communication; asks questions and accepts feedback constructively.
• Accountable for accuracy of assigned tasks; works under direct supervision with detailed instructions.
• All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment background check.

Responsibilities

• Assists with preparation of engineering design documents, plans, and specifications under direct supervision.
• Prepares drawings and draft documents under direction.
• Collects and organizes field data, reports, maps, aerial photographs, and geotechnical and hydrological data.
• Produces basic drawings, models, calculations, or code under direct supervision using approved tools (CAD/BIM, analysis, or programming software).
• Views, navigates, and measures 2D and 3D models to support the project team.
• Follows established CAD/BIM, graphics, coding, and file-naming standards and workflows.
• Collects and organizes project and operational data for use as analysis or model inputs.
• Performs basic numerical and statistical analysis and assists with testing/validation of models.
• Documents assumptions, process flows, and results for supervisor review.
