Job summary

Markel Corporation in Lake Oswego, OR is seeking an experienced Surety Underwriter to independently underwrite contract bonds, assess risk, and build a profitable book in a designated territory.

You will visit agents, collaborate with brokers, and contribute to projects while mentoring others. A bachelor’s degree and 3–5 years in underwriting are preferred, with strong communication and decision-making under authority limits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required or preferred with 3–5 years in underwriting contract bonds.
• Solid understanding of contract and subdivision bond underwriting.
• Ability to write and convey complex information concisely.
• Underwrites for profitable premium growth.
• Familiarity with the surety rate manual.
• Makes quick, sound decisions under supervision limits and negotiates terms within authority.
• Self-sufficient and able to overcome obstacles.
• Takes ownership and provides guidance to others.
• Experience with larger agents/brokers.

Primary responsibilities include:

1) independently underwrite contract bonds adhering to Markel Surety’s underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk and 2) conduct all forms of marketing to strategically build a profitable book in a designated territory.

• Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers
• Consistently achieves budgeted financial results through superior service, account retention and responsiveness to new business submissions
• Considers different approaches towards risks based upon class of business
• Participates on projects having an impact on the business
• Identifies and captures new business opportunities
• Able to create tactical sales plans; track results and execute necessary corrective action
• Open to regular visits to agents

What we’re looking for:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred Incumbent should have completed 3 - 5 years in an underwriting capacity
• Qualified candidate has demonstrated a solid understanding of contract and subdivision bond underwriting
• Ability to write and articulate in a concise and clear manner to convey complex information
• Underwrites for profitable premium growth
• Associate learns the nuances of the surety rate manual
• Under minimal supervision makes quick sound decisions and negotiates terms and conditions consistent with underwriting authority limits, standards and within submission timeframes.
• Self-sufficient with demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles
• Takes ownership and responsibility for decisions and outcomes
• Provides guidance and coaching to others
• Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers
