Job summary

CRB, a leading engineering, architecture, construction and consulting firm, seeks a strategic Payroll Manager to lead end-to-end payroll for a multi-state, project-based organization. The role focuses on accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement through HRIS enhancements and automation.

The ideal candidate brings deep payroll expertise, strong leadership, and a track record supporting HRIS implementations. Hybrid work in Kansas City, MO with in-office presence three days per week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, Business Administration or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive payroll experience including leadership.
• 3+ years of people leadership experience managing payroll teams.
• Experience processing payroll in a multi-state environment.
• Experience with Workday, Dayforce, or comparable payroll/HRIS platforms.
• Experience with HRIS implementations, conversions, or major system enhancements.
• Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, wage and hour laws, and payroll accounting.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and payroll reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead, manage, and oversee all payroll operations for multi-state payrolls.
• Direct the day-to-day activities and performance of payroll personnel.
• Establish service standards, workflows, and controls for accuracy and compliance.
• Own payroll calendars, deadlines, reconciliations, and year-end activities.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and international payroll regulations as applicable.
• Oversee HRIS and payroll technology initiatives and system improvements.
• Lead payroll-related workstreams for HRIS implementations, upgrades, and integrations.
• Partner with HR, IT, and Finance to optimize processes through automation.
• Maintain data governance and payroll reporting accuracy.
• Support audits and regulatory reviews with internal teams.
