Job summary

New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) is seeking an experienced Human Resources Director to lead HR strategy, employee and labor relations, compensation, and compliance across our unionized workforce. This senior role reports to the Chief of Staff and requires strong collaboration and experience in advocacy organizations.

The Director will manage a small HR team, foster an inclusive culture, and drive professional development while safeguarding staff interests and organizational values.

Qualifications

• Ten years of HR experience with at least five in a leadership role.
• Significant HR leadership in political, labor, or advocacy settings.
• Extensive knowledge of employee relations, employment law, compensation, hiring and recruitment, org planning and development.
• Experience handling unionized employee relations, including collective bargaining.
• High ethics, judgment, reliability and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of HR programs and services that recognize staff strengths and contributions.
• Oversee day-to-day HR functions: recruitment, employee relations, compensation, benefits, compliance, performance management, HRIS, and data.
• Evaluate and strengthen HR systems to meet evolving organizational needs.
• Ensure legal compliance and best practices; mitigate HR-related risk.
• Manage a small HR team and support staff unions in negotiations and relations.
• Oversee onboarding, offboarding, and lifecycle HR processes.
• Develop and communicate HR policies to maintain positive staff relations and inclusive culture.
• Provide guidance on conflict resolution and supervise grievance processes.
• Design staff development opportunities and routine performance reviews.
