Job summary

The University of Washington seeks a Claims and Litigation Manager to lead the university's claims program, oversee investigations, and coordinate with third‑party administrators to resolve medical professional liability, general liability, auto, and property claims.

Reporting to the Director of Claim Services, you will negotiate settlements, analyze complex regulations, deliver presentations on claim trends, and mentor staff while ensuring timely communication with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field.
• Five years of experience with claims and litigation management.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to analyze complex rules and apply regulations.
• Ability to develop and deliver presentations on claim trends.
• Proficiency with computer systems and databases.
• Strong customer service and negotiation skills.

Responsibilities

• Managing claims and lawsuits (80%).
• Perform investigations, including in-person and on-site meetings, interviews and site work.
• Determine appropriate coverage source for entities and individuals named in claims and lawsuits.
• Negotiate settlements within delegated authority; obtaining authority in excess of delegation.
• Work collaboratively on liability claims handled by third party administrator (10%).
• Provide initial direction to third party administrator for each claim and collaborate on the direction of the claim as it progresses.
• Work with third party administrator(s) on meetings with UW stakeholders and indemnitees, investigation techniques, settlement evaluations, negotiations, and UW-specific matters.
• Review and authorize settlement of claims within delegated authority, as appropriate.
• Reporting and communicating on claims and claim trends (7%).
• Communicate with Attorney General’s Office, Human Resources, Special Assistant Attorneys General, UW schools, colleges and divisions, and consulting professionals.
• Make presentations to audiences on claim trends and risk management.
• Identify and recommend policy changes related to liability lessons and trends.
• Report claims to insurers as needed and fulfill their communication requirements.
• Fulfill claims-related safety and regulatory responsibilities and special projects.
