Job summary

McFarland Johnson (MJ) is seeking a motivated Drainage/Stormwater Engineer to join our Water Resources Group. Join a 100% employee-owned firm with 80 years of experience delivering innovative infrastructure solutions.

You will work on transportation, bridge, aviation, municipal, and land development projects, handling stormwater management, H&H analysis, drainage design, and environmental permitting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in water resources, stormwater, drainage, or civil engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic principles, stormwater management practices, and civil engineering design standards.
  • Experience with modeling and design tools such as Bentley Open Roads Designer, OpenRoads Drainage and Utilities, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and HydroCAD.
  • Familiarity with DOT/client drainage manuals, stormwater design criteria, and agency-specific requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools such as ESRI's ArcMap, QGIS.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses for roadways, bridges, drainage systems, and stormwater networks.
  • Support design of stormwater management and drainage infrastructure per regulations.
  • Prepare calculations, reports, permit applications, construction plans, specs, and cost estimates.
  • Use H&H modeling, CAD, and GIS to support analysis, design, and documentation.
  • Conduct field investigations, site assessments, and data collection.
  • Support permitting efforts (stormwater, wetlands, floodplain, MS4/NPDES, erosion control).
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and environmental permitting activities.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, environmental scientists, and PMs on projects.
