Job summary

The State of Washington, Department of Enterprise Services, Buildings & Grounds Division, is seeking two Stationary Engineer 2 for on-site work in Olympia. The role covers daily operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers, chilled water systems, and plant equipment across Capitol Campus facilities.

You will ensure reliable steam, hot water, and climate control, while following strict safety and reporting procedures in a union environment. Training opportunities may be available.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; 3 years of boiler/heating system experience.
• Advanced Stationary Engineer certificate with 2 years boiler/heating system experience.
• 1 year of experience as Stationary Engineer 1.
• 3 years of experience as a Steam Propulsion Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains the high-pressure steam heating plant and boilers.
• Uses Metasys to manage steam and chilled water systems.
• Performs water testing and treatment for steam and chilled water.
• Conducts hourly facility walkthroughs and logs readings.
• Corrects abnormal equipment operation per procedures.
• Monitors Capitol Lake levels and notifies supervision of issues.
• Receives and dispatches after-hours non-emergency requests for DES facilities.
• Documents all activities in Mainsaver and plant logs.
• Performs other duties as needed.

The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About The Opportunity

As a Stationary Engineer 2, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Powerhouse, ensuring the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of high-pressure steam boilers, central steam distribution systems, and commercial refrigeration equipment. Your day-to-day work will involve performing preventative maintenance on critical water treatment systems, including cooling towers and chilled water loops, as well as fabricating, installing, and analyzing complex electrical, electronic, and pneumatic climate control systems. Additionally, you will support auxiliary components like air handlers, dampers, and bearings, while serving as the primary contact to receive, prioritize, and dispatch after-hours non-emergency service requests for Thurston County DES facilities.

Duties

Some Of What You’ll Enjoy Doing Includes

• Operates and maintains the high-pressure steam heating plant, stationary boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment to deliver steam, hot water, and chilled water to 13 Capitol Campus buildings.
• Utilizes the Metasys central control system to adjust campus steam and chilled water systems and manage the proper operation of the Capitol Lake Dam.
• Performs water and feedwater testing and treatment to ensure consistent steam and chilled water production.
• Conducts mandatory hourly walkthroughs to inspect facility assets, check for deficiencies, and log all required technical readings.
• Corrects and documents any equipment operating outside of normal parameters before the end of the shift according to written procedures.
• Monitors Capitol Lake levels to prevent flooding or extreme lows, notifying supervision immediately of any unusual issues.
• Serves as the primary contact for after-hours non-emergency calls regarding Thurston County DES facilities, prioritizing and dispatching service requests as needed.
• Initiates required incident reports and documents all activities into the Mainsaver system and plant logbooks.
• Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

To qualify for this position, a candidate must possess one (1) of the below experience and/or education options. NOTE: Applicants who are within six (6) months of meeting the required qualifications may be considered for hire. Selected candidates may be placed on a structured six (6) month training plan as part of the hiring and probationary period to support successful attainment of the required qualifications.

OPTION 1

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND
• Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationery or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems.

OPTION 2

• Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college; AND
• Two (2) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationery or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems.

OPTION 3

• One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 1.

OPTION 4

• Three (3) years of experience as a Steam Propulsion Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of high-pressure boiler operations, auxiliary equipment, maintenance materials, safety protocols, and automatic control systems.
• Knowledge and experience in managing chilled water plant operations alongside facility heating, ventilation, lighting, power, and related mechanical equipment.
• Skilled in testing and analyzing steam boiler operations, keeping detailed records, writing reports, and instructing or supervising personnel.
• Capable of working independently with minimal supervision while performing heavy manual labor under extreme temperature conditions.
