Job summary

The West Virginia Bureau for Social Services seeks an top-level Commissioner to provide strategic direction and executive management for the state's social welfare programs. You will lead deputy commissioners and oversee Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, and related services, reporting to state government and lawmakers.

The role demands deep expertise in social work policy, fiscal management, and exceptional communication with legislators, judicial partners, and frontline

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in social work (MSW) or equivalent.
• Master’s degree in public administration (MPA) or closely related field.
• Minimum 7–10 years of progressive executive-level management experience.

Responsibilities

• Legislative & policy engagement: present data, report outcomes, answer lawmakers.
• Public speaking & community relations: deliver keynote addresses and updates to providers and staff.
• Executive leadership & operations: oversee deputy commissioners and major programs.
• Fiscal & budget management: oversee state budget and grants to ensure impact.
