Job summary

Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Voice AI Team. You will own end-to-end design and delivery of scalable backend services powering Toast's voice platform, collaborating with product, engineering, and stakeholders to convert ambiguous problems into reliable systems.

You will shape technical direction, lead cross-team projects, and mentor engineers while building integrations with AI platforms and maintaining high observability and cost awareness in production systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years experience with OO languages such as Java or Kotlin.
• Bachelor’s degree in CS/SE/CE or related field.
• Experience integrating AI features with LLMs or AI capabilities.
• Experience building AI-powered, observable, cost-aware systems.
• Shipping mission-critical production services and ownership.
• Led multi-person, multi-team projects end-to-end.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems and reliability.
• Frontend development familiarity.
• Strong cross-team collaboration and influence.
• Active use of AI coding tools in day-to-day development.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, deploy, and maintain scalable backend services for Toast's Voice AI platform.
• Lead cross-cutting projects from design to production with stakeholder alignment.
• Shape technical direction and reduce complexity for engineers and teams.
• Build and evolve integrations with AI platforms and internal Toast systems.
• Establish observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks for AI-powered systems.
• Set and uphold engineering quality through standards and guidance.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance.
