Job summary

Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Catering & Events to drive the design and delivery of complex, scalable systems that power restaurant and catering workflows. You will work across the stack, collaborating with product managers and designers to deliver high-impact features quickly.

You will mentor engineers, guide architectural decisions, and champion engineering excellence while shaping initiatives with a strong focus on reliability and observability.

Qualifications

• Experience leading the design and delivery of large-scale distributed systems in production.
• Backend expertise in Java or Kotlin with ability to contribute across the full stack.
• Ability to design scalable architectures and make high-quality tradeoffs across systems and teams.
• Experience navigating ambiguity and aligning stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions.
• Strong technical leadership, including mentoring engineers and elevating engineering standards.
• Deep understanding of microservices, system design, and observability.
• Ability to decompose complex problems into clear strategies and guide teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of complex, high-impact initiatives spanning multiple teams and systems, from concept through production.
• Own and evolve the architecture of critical systems for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Drive technical strategy and simplify systems to improve engineering velocity.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and stakeholders to shape ambiguous problems into actionable solutions with measurable impact.
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar for engineering excellence through reviews and hands-on collaboration.
• Promote best practices for code quality, testing, observability, and operational excellence across services.
• Identify and address system-wide risks, bottlenecks, and scaling challenges.
• Champion AI and emerging technologies to unlock new capabilities and productivity.
