Job summary

Gusto, a leader in payroll and HR for small businesses, is hiring a Staff Engineer for PEO Growth. You will own end-to-end onboarding adoption and build durable, scalable frontend and backend solutions in a regulated domain, using Ruby on Rails and React/TypeScript.

You will influence multiple teams, drive data-driven improvements, and leverage AI tooling to improve the onboarding experience while maintaining high quality and security standards.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience owning customer-facing surfaces in large production codebases.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.

Responsibilities

• Own the PEO Onboarding experience end to end from discovery to setup.
• Set technical direction, turn ambiguous bets into designs and abstractions.
• Build in a regulated domain with emphasis on quality and accuracy.
• Partner across app teams to create a coherent journey and resolve ownership seams.
• Apply AI tooling in daily work and help embed guidance in onboarding.
• Measure funnel performance and drive changes via experiments over intuition.
• Raise engineering standards for reviews, testing, and observability.
