Job summary

Gusto is seeking a seasoned Staff Software Engineer for its PEO Benefits team. You will shape the architecture for a national health plan and build systems to unlock healthcare cost savings for small businesses.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll own features end-to-end—from spec through launch—writing clean frontend code, building backend APIs, and guiding product direction while taking ownership after a release.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• 3+ years of PEO experience preferred.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale.
• Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity — scoping, sequencing, and unblocking with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the Gusto PEO Benefits experience and related flows.
• Mentor other engineers to solve hard technical problems at scale.
• Scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications in the world.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to translate customer pain points into solutions and launch
