Job summary

Gusto, a leader in payroll and HR tech, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the PEO Benefits team. You will shape and build the benefits experience, including shopping flows, plan recommendations, and integrations, influencing product direction and owning features end-to-end.

You will mentor engineers, work across teams, and drive scalable architecture for a high-growth environment, delivering value to millions of small businesses nationwide.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• 3+ years PEO experience preferred.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems.
• Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity.
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and deliver new product capabilities.
• Ability to mentor engineers to maximize performance and impact.
• Ability to communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the Gusto PEO Benefits experience, including flows, carrier integrations, MCP tools, and automation of ops and support.
• Mentor other engineers to help solve the hardest technical problems at scale.
• Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to understand issues, prototype solutions, and launch iteratively.
• Build products that customers love and drive real-world impact.
