Job summary

Lyft is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to be a critical technical leader across backend, frontend, iOS, and Android, owning complex systems, defining strategic roadmaps, and driving cross-functional alignment and engineering excellence. You will collaborate with engineering, product, data science, analytics, and operations to iterate quickly and delight passengers and drivers.

Ownership is key: you should track a project to successful completion and beyond.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering industry experience with technical leadership and ownership.
• Experience developing mobile apps and guiding client-server / iOS-Android decisions.
• Deep expertise in fault-tolerant, highly available, large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience driving technical roadmaps, cross-team dependencies, and architectural influence.
• Knowledge of distributed systems, relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with public clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker, cri-o).
• Ability to explain complex trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Shape the long-term architecture of full-stack systems and own health.
• Translate business goals into engineering projects and manage roadmaps.
• Champion observability, performance, and tech debt reduction across teams.
• Establish deployment, alerting, and on-call health practices for platform stability.
• Drive cross-functional alignment with product, design, and operations.
• Mentor engineers, delegate stretch opportunities, and lead cross-team reviews.
• Serve as a high-bar interviewer and active member of Lyft’s engineering community.
