Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Enterprise Applications and Architecture (EAA-CX) group to drive AI maturity, improve developer experience, and elevate Tier-1 platform quality across globally distributed squads. You will architect solutions on Coinbase's AI infrastructure and own SLO-driven backend services in a regulated environment.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with distributed systems.
• Ability to independently lead ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from whiteboard to production.
• Strong experience with cloud-native infrastructure including AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, MQ) and SQL or NoSQL databases.
• Track record building secure internal tools in regulated environments.
• Experience with agentic AI systems including MCP servers, LLM orchestration, RAG pipelines, HITL workflows, or evaluation/guardrail frameworks, with Go and Python.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Own the EAA-CX AI maturity and developer-experience roadmap, partnering with engineering leadership across squads.
• Lead platform-excellence workstreams to improve reliability, observability, change-failure rate, and operational readiness for Tier-1 systems.
• Define build-versus-buy strategy for developer-experience and AI tooling across EAA-CX.
• Provide Staff-level architectural coverage across squads to land architecture or delivery while maintaining portfolio coherence.
• Build highly reliable, secure distributed backend services with full SLO ownership and compliant production changes.
