Job summary

Gusto is seeking seasoned Staff Software Engineers for the HR Experience team. You will shape features across frontend and backend, influence product direction, and own lifecycle from design to launch.

You’ll mentor engineers, scale a major Ruby/Rails/React app, and push AI-enabled workflows to improve compliance and HR processes for small businesses. The role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, experience delivering multi-quarter projects, and a proactive approach to safe, scalable

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Compliance/HR domain expertise preferred.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems at scale.
• Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity.
• Active use of agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code or Codex).
• Experience with building agents and MCP tools and applying them safely.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test across Gusto’s HR experience applications.
• Build AI tools and agents to scale the HR Partners team.
• Mentor other engineers to solve complex problems at scale.
• Scale a large Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React application.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Platform teams to ship features.
• Build products that customers love.
