Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Staff Software Engineer on the Agent Productivity team to shape the foundation for building secure agents with Slack as the primary surface. You will own architecture, governance, and automation while extending patterns to internal systems and enterprise applications.

You will define platform foundations, reusable components, and secure patterns for identity, permissions, connectivity, and operation, enabling scalable agent development and deployment across OpenAI's ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Deep hands-on software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Strong backend and distributed-systems fundamentals, including API design, integrations, and production reliability.
• Experience building developer platforms, reusable tooling, or shared services that improve development and deployment.
• Experience integrating enterprise platforms such as Slack and navigating API, identity, and operational constraints.
• Experience designing secure, permission-aware systems that access sensitive data or act on behalf of users.
• Ability to lead ambiguous technical initiatives across teams balancing developer experience, security, and long-term architecture.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and architecture enabling teams to build, connect, and deploy agents quickly and safely, with Slack as the primary surface.
• Design and build secure, reliable services granting permission-aware access to context, tools, and actions across Slack and enterprise systems.
• Establish scalable patterns for connectivity, context retrieval, authorization, and action execution across diverse systems.
• Develop reusable SDKs, connectors, templates, testing tools, and deployment patterns to reduce integration effort.
• Build policy-aware automation and lifecycle management for agents, apps, and integrations including ownership and credential rotation.
• Implement governance and observability enforcing least privilege and visibility into agent behavior and data access.
• Set operational standards for reliability, auditability, testing, and incident response.
• Collaborate with IT, Security, Privacy, Legal, product teams, and platform providers to shape technical direction.
