Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to shape the foundation for building secure, scalable agent productivity. You will own architecture, governance, and automation for Slack-centric implementations while extending patterns to internal systems and enterprise apps.

The role requires hands-on engineering, strong backend fundamentals, and experience building developer platforms and integrations across enterprise environments.

Qualifications

• Deep hands-on software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Strong backend and distributed-systems fundamentals including API design and reliability.
• Experience building developer platforms, reusable tooling, or shared services.
• Experience integrating enterprise platforms such as Slack and handling API, identity, and operational constraints.
• Experience designing secure, permission-aware systems and leading ambiguous technical initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and architecture enabling teams to build, connect, and deploy agents via Slack as the primary surface.
• Design secure, reliable services for permission-aware access to context, tools, and actions across Slack and internal systems.
• Establish scalable patterns for connectivity, context retrieval, authorization, and action execution across varied systems.
• Develop reusable SDKs, connectors, templates, testing tools, and deployment patterns to reduce integration effort.
• Build governance and observability to enforce least privilege and protect data boundaries.
• Set operational standards for reliability, auditing, testing, incident response, and secure self-service.
• Collaborate with IT, Security, Privacy, Legal, product teams to shape direction and roadmaps.
