Job summary

BILL is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to build and scale our accounting software sync solutions within the Sync team. You will design and implement scalable products for BILL's payment network, mentor junior engineers, and drive end-to-end solutions from concept through launch.

The role requires 8+ years of experience, deep Java/SQL/NoSQL expertise, and strong SDLC leadership. Expect collaboration across teams and a focus on performance and customer impact.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Ability to lead a team of developers in building complex software solutions.
• Proven ability to take the product through all stages of development from concept to launch.
• Expertise with all aspects of SDLC including code reviews, unit testing, automation testing and CI/CD.
• Experience with system design.
• Expert-level knowledge of Java, SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with dev tools like Splunk, Datadog, Mixpanel, LaunchDarkly.
• Experience leveraging Gen AI technologies to accelerate software engineering by designing prompts, rigorously evaluating outputs, and integrating LLMs.
• Business acumen - able to leverage the platform to solve business problems.
• Passion for great products and building great customer experiences.

BILL is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to build and scale our accounting software sync solutions. This individual will be a member of the Sync team and will be responsible for designing and implementing scalable products for the BILL business payment network. Proven experience in leading, scoping, designing and implementing end‑to‑end software solutions is a must.

Sync Team

The Sync team is responsible for building, maintaining, enhancing, and scaling deep two‑way synchronization solutions between BILL payment platform/network and all major accounting software products used by its customers. Used by nearly 90% of our paying Small Business customers, sync is one of the core features that allows our customers to keep their bills, payments and other data in sync with their accounting systems. The sync team is working on moonshot goals to improve our user experience by 10x and building new microservices in AWS to provide new features for customers to keep their data in sync with a variety of third party systems.

• 8+ years of software development experience
• Ability to lead a team of developers in building complex software solutions

• Experience with system design
• Expert-level knowledge of Java, SQL and NoSQL databases
• Expertise in making step-function improvements in performance and scale of platforms
• Business acumen - able to leverage the platform to solve business problems
• Passion for great products and building great customer experiences
• Experience with dev tools like Splunk, Datadog, Mixpanel, LaunchDarkly etc.
• Experience leveraging Gen AI technologies to accelerate software engineering by designing prompts, rigorously evaluating outputs, and integrating LLMs

Ideal To Have

• Expertise with using AWS services to build microservices
• Familiar with frontend development with React and Angular
• Accounting domain knowledge (knows the basics of double-entry accounting, General Ledger, AP/AR)
• Knowledge and experience in one of - accounting OR ERP OR FinTech (back-end, e.g., Payments)
• Some familiarity or interest with Machine Learning and Recommendation engines

Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed below. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits. The estimated salary ranges noted below roles in the specific geographic zones

Zone 1: San Francisco Bay Area CA (includes HQ), New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles County

$184,000—$220,800 USD

Zone 2: CA (Non San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County), Austin TX, Massachusetts

$165,600—$198,700 USD

Zone 3: Utah (includes Utah office), Dallas TX, Houston TX, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Oregon, Pennsylvania

$156,400—$187,700 USD
