Job summary

BILL is seeking a Director of Technical Accounting to lead revenue recognition strategy and oversee complex, non-routine transactions. You will partner with Sales, Legal, FP&A and auditors to ensure US GAAP compliance in a fast-paced fintech environment.

The role is remote-first with offices in San Jose, CA and Draper, UT, offering a competitive benefits package including health, retirement, and stock programs. You will draft memos and shape BILL’s accounting policies for scalable growth.

Qualifications

• Active CPA license and current US GAAP knowledge.
• 10+ years of accounting experience with SaaS/FinTech preferred.
• 6+ years in technical accounting at Big 4 or public tech company.

Responsibilities

• Lead revenue recognition strategy (ASC 606) and non-routine transactions.
• Oversee stock-based compensation accounting and forecasting.
• Partner with Sales, Legal, FP&A and external auditors.
• Draft and maintain technical accounting memos.
• Review complex contracts for revenue recognition and SSP.
• Maintain and update accounting policies.
• Monitor FASB/SEC updates and implement changes.
• Act as primary liaison with external auditors.

Make Your Impact Within a Rapidly Growing Fintech Company

• As Director of Technical Accounting, you will lead our revenue recognition strategy, manage complex non-routine transactions, and oversee stock-based compensation accounting and forecasting.
• This position requires a strong foundation in US GAAP, specifically navigating the nuances of SaaS and FinTech revenue streams.
• Serve as the primary technical accounting subject matter expert partnering with Sales, Legal, FP&A and other business stakeholders to provide guidance and ensure compliance with US GAAP.
• It’s an individual contributor position.
• Draft and maintain technical accounting memos.
• Review complex, non-standard customer contracts and partnership agreements to determine appropriate revenue recognition treatment, standalone selling price (SSP) allocations, and gross versus net revenue presentation.
• Maintain and update BILL’s accounting policies.
• Monitor standard-setting bodies (FASB, SEC) for updates impacting our accounting policies and procedures and implement required changes.
• Act as the primary liaison with external auditors for revenue, equity, and other complex transaction matters, ensuring timely resolution of technical issues.

We’d Love To Chat If You Have

• Active CPA license.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 6 years at a Big 4 public accounting firm, at a public technology or fintech company, with 6+ years focused on technical accounting.
• Deep ASC 606, ASC 310 and ASC 326 expertise, ideally in SaaS, payments or platform businesses with transaction-based revenue.
• Hands‑on experience with ASC 718, ASC 260 and ASC 805.
• Proven track record writing technical memos for complex, judgmental transactions and defending accounting conclusions with auditors.
• Clear, concise communicator who can translate technical accounting into business impact for executives and business partners.

Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed below. Zone 1: San Francisco Bay Area CA (includes HQ), New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles County

$172,600—$216,300 USD

Zone 2: CA (Non San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County), Austin TX, Massachusetts

$155,400—$194,700 USD

Zone 3: Utah (includes Utah office), Dallas TX, Houston TX, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Oregon, Pennsylvania

$146,700—$183,900 USD
