The CalSTRS Audit ServicesDivision is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Staff Services Management Auditor in the Internal Audits Unit . CalSTRS delegated authority to Audit Services to perform audits in order to evaluate a school employer’s compliance with the Teacher’s Retirement Law. The mission of Audit Services is to provide independent, objective assurance through audit and consulting services designed to add value and improve CalSTRS operations. Audit Services assists CalSTRS in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal control and governance processes. Audit Services is an integral part of the accomplishment of goals and objectives established for CalSTRS operations and programs. Audit Services consists of Employer and Internal Audits, Data Solutions, and Operations.
The Internal Audit Unit provides risk-based and objective assurance, advice and insight to assist management in ethically, effectively and efficiently fulfilling their management responsibilities. The Internal Audit team executes an approved audit plan based upon an annual risk assessment, or as requested by the CalSTRS board and/or CalSTRS Executive Staff. The team performs audits of internal operations and will perform the following in accordance with its overall strategy: Provide objective assurance on the effectiveness of enterprise risk management activities to help ensure key business risks are being managed appropriately and that the system of internal control is operating effectively. Verify the existence of assets and recommend proper safeguards for their protection. Examine, evaluate and reports on the adequacy and reliability of existing internal controls. Assess compliance with state and federal laws, contractual obligations, policies and procedures and sound business practices. Review operations/programs to ascertain whether results are consistent with established objectives and whether the operations/programs are being carried out as planned.
Under supervision of the Staff Management Auditor, the Staff Services Management Auditor receives on-the-job training in planning, conducting and reporting results of CalSTRS’ internal audits. Audit work is performed in accordance with applicable State policies and procedures; Division and unit policies and procedures; and the Global Internal Audit Standards. This position requires the ability to work independently under close supervision and on-the-job training to learn to develop audit objectives, conduct preliminary surveys, prepare audit plans, and develop audit programs that achieve audit objectives of specific audits and special projects. This position may also receive direction from a Staff Management Auditor, Staff Program Auditor (SPA) and/or an Associate Management Auditor.

Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025. This program reduces employees’ monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits for the duration of the program. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the reduced amounts.

CalSTRS Personal Trading Program Investment Branch employees are required to participate in the CalSTRS Personal Trading Program which allows CalSTRS to monitor employees’ personal trading transactions in order to reduce risks associated with insider trading, front running, and misusing material non-public information. Upon accepting a position within the Investment Branch, you will be required to disclose your personal broker account information and be required to utilize a personal broker from a designated list as provided by CalSTRS.
Background Investigation
Prior to employment with CalSTRS, a background investigation (BI) will be conducted. The BI consists of a Personal History Statement and fingerprinting through the Department of Justice. The BI will check criminal and civil records and, if applicable, verify education and check driving records.
CalSTRS Disclosure Requirements
This position may be subject to disclosure and disqualification requirements concerning economic conflict of interest in government work, including the Conflict of Interest Code that applies to CalSTRS team members and the Political Reform Act, which require disclosure of certain investment information and use of a designated trading platform for securities transactions, as well as filing a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700).
