Job summary

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Staff-level Restoration Engineer with a passion for ecosystem restoration and water resource engineering. This full-time, hourly, benefits-eligible position supports SWCA’s ecological restoration projects across the Great Lakes and the United States, with a hybrid or distributed work arrangement from our Lombard, Illinois office.

The role emphasizes stream, wetland, and shore design, with exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydraulics modeling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Agricultural, Biological, Civil, Environmental, or Coastal Engineering).
• 1 year of ecosystem restoration design experience.
• Knowledge of erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and civil site design principles.
• Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and analysis software.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Supports development of engineering designs for restoration projects, including stream and wetland design, living shorelines, and nature-based infrastructure.
• Performs field investigations to support restoration projects and collects data.
• Prepares technical reports summarizing findings from inspections, analyses, and fieldwork.
• Assists in permitting and regulatory approvals by preparing required documentation.
• Performs construction oversight to monitor contractor performance and ensure project adherence to specs.
• Assists in evaluating sites and restoration approaches for technical and financial viability.
• Prepares construction drawings and specifications for assigned projects.
• Supports modeling and calculations to inform designs and evaluate scenarios.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to integrate environmental science and engineering principles.
• Engages in professional development to stay current with restoration engineering trends.
• Follows regulations and standards.
• Performs related work as assigned.
