Major Responsibilities
- Accurately deliver the prescribed dose of radiation for cancer treatment.
- Position patients according to setup instructions, ensuring proper immobilization for precise radiation delivery.
- Assist physicians with procedures, providing technical suggestions and limitations.
- Monitor patient symptoms, determine when to withhold treatment, and consult with physicians as needed.
- Schedule outpatient appointments for patients.
- Participate in special treatment options like brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.
- Perform CT simulation techniques when assigned.
- Supervise and instruct students in clinical programs.
- Monitor patient weight weekly, notifying nursing staff of significant changes.
- Ensure patient safety by reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives.
- Calculate treatment units based on prescriptions and parameters.
- Assess treatment plans and setups, executing them accordingly.
- Take weekly verification films of treated areas.
Compliance and Safety
- Maintain licensure and demonstrate ongoing compliance.
- Attend safety in-service training.
- Maintain visual and audio contact with patients during treatment.
- Wear monitoring devices to detect exposure.
- Monitor equipment operation, report malfunctions, and ensure proper functioning prior to treatments.
- Document treatment data accurately in patient records and computer systems.
- Stay updated on advances in radiation therapy through literature, meetings, and training.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an ARRT-approved School of Radiation Therapy Technology.
- Knowledge of various treatment modalities, experience with linear accelerators, simulators, and communication skills.
- CPR certification.
- Active ARRT license or eligible, with licensure obtained within 6 months of hire; active Illinois IEMA license required.
Physical and Work Environment
- Effective communication skills with patients of all ages.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient handling equipment for heavier lifts.
- Ability to work under stress and safely with radiation.
- Experience with diverse age groups is preferred.
