Job summary

MZLA Technologies Corporation, the nonprofit-owned team behind Thunderbird, seeks a Staff Product Engineer to advance Thunderbolt from early development to enterprise use. You will translate product vision into practical plans, own feature delivery end-to-end, and collaborate across product, design, engineering and open-source communities.

You will shape AI-powered features, ensure security and reliability, and drive adoption across enterprise workflows while balancing speed and quality.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong full-stack engineering skills across UI, APIs, services, data flows
• Experience owning complex product features from planning to launch
• Experience building AI-enabled products or features with LLMs, retrieval, or AI architecture
• Experience evaluating multiple AI tools and tradeoffs
• Experience with open-source enterprise products and complex enterprise software
• Strong product judgment turning direction into practical technical plans
• Ability to operate in a fast-changing product environment
• Strong understanding of software quality, testing, security, performance and reliability
• Strong collaboration across engineering, product, design, open-source, and customer teams
• Awareness of enterprise software needs including privacy, security, access control, compliance and governance
• Experience with self-hosted/hybrid/regulated deployment environments
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks affecting AI and enterprise software
• Experience with enterprise customers and public sector engagements
• Experience contributing to reusable product patterns and libraries
• Experience with instrumentation, observability, experimentation and product value measurement

Responsibilities

• Own the implementation of Thunderbolt product features from concept through launch, adoption, and iteration.
• Translate product vision, user needs, partner feedback, and enterprise requirements into practical technical plans and shipped product experiences.
• Work across the stack to build, integrate, test, and ship complete product features.
• Build features for AI-powered chat, search, research, workflow automation, administration, integrations, and enterprise workflows.
• Partner with product, design, engineering, enterprise-facing teams, and open-source contributors to clarify requirements and deliver high-quality outcomes.
• Collaborate with senior technical leadership to turn product-shaping technical direction into executable product work.
• Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation while maintaining quality, security and reliability.
• Make thoughtful technical and product tradeoffs in ambiguous situations balancing speed, usability and reliability.
• Review usage, feedback, support signals, quality issues and adoption patterns post-launch.
• Instrument features or collaborate on measurement approaches to understand adoption, reliability and value.
• Identify product gaps, risks, edge cases and opportunities to improve UX.
• Write clear, maintainable, well-tested code across frontend, backend, APIs, integrations and infrastructure adjacent areas.
• Help establish reusable product and engineering patterns for future features.
• Contribute to a product engineering culture grounded in ownership, quality, experimentation, user value and execution.
