Description
Responsible for the care activities and goal achievements of assigned patients by assessing, diagnosing, planning, and intervening in actual or potential health problems and evaluating patients' responses to care. Responsible for health teaching and discharge planning. Acts as a member of a designated care team, collaborating, coordinating, and guiding team members in planning patient care activities. Demonstrates behaviors reflecting scientific knowledge, judgment, and teaching skills of a professional nurse.
Responsibilities
- Conduct nursing assessments based on interviews, examinations, observations, and review of patient records.
- Ensure that patient progress, or lack thereof, is documented in progress notes and care plans.
- Develop discharge plans consistent with patient status, reflecting inter-departmental and inter-agency communication.
- Communicate information to patients based on their level of awareness and readiness to learn.
- Support orientation of new staff by observing professional behaviors, providing feedback, and acting as a preceptor and role model.
- Function as a professional role model and mentor for students and volunteers.
- Assign patient care considering patient needs and personnel skill levels.
- Organize care provision to meet priority needs of patients and the unit.
- Communicate patient and unit conditions requiring additional intervention to relevant leadership.
- Participate in staff development activities.
- Communicate with peers to appraise practice related to self and others.
- Collaborate effectively to meet patient and unit needs through communication and nursing actions.
- Provide direction, assistance, and support to team members.
- Take accountability for the completion and quality of assigned tasks.
- Identify and communicate training needs to supervisors.
- Understand nursing management authorities and responsibilities, communicating with leadership accordingly.
- Utilize nursing leaders as role models and resources.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to meet patient and unit needs.
- Align interactions with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Department of Nursing and hospital, including interactions with families and groups.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Nursing program; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) with current RN licensure; matriculation in a BSN program with graduation within the year is acceptable.
- Experience or educational preparation supporting credentials; specialized skills may be required for certain areas.
- RN license (1 year) issued by DOH / Office of Professions.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certificate (required for L&D, NICU).
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Minimum 1 year NICU experience required.
