Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Staff Materials Engineer specializing in metallurgy to drive materials development for SPARC and ARC systems in Devens, MA. You will translate performance requirements into material specs and lead supplier collaboration.

You'll work across design, manufacturing, and supply chain to scale metal production, optimize properties under neutron, cryogenic, and high-temperature conditions, and mentor junior engineers in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree with post-graduate experience in metallurgy or materials science; bachelor’s considered depending on experience.
• 10+ years experience in metallurgy/materials engineering.
• Experience with large-scale metal production processes and joining processes.

Responsibilities

• Translate performance requirements into verifiable material property requirements and test methods.
• Identify materials and processes for high-volume manufacturing with focus on manufacturability, scalability, and cost.
• Select international materials standards and author materials specifications for fusion applications.
• Lead materials development projects when existing materials don’t meet requirements.
• Collaborate with design, supply chain, and manufacturing engineers to qualify materials and processing methods.
• Provide SME for root cause analyses involving materials in production.
• Review and report materials property data in databases.
