Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks a Senior Materials Engineer focused on metals and alloys for high-performance fusion components. The role involves translating requirements into testable material specs, guiding material selection for high-volume manufacturing, and collaborating across design, supply chain, and production.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in metallurgy, materials science, or related field; post-graduate experience preferred
  • Minimum 10+ years experience in metals/public production or R&D settings
  • Experience with large-scale metal production processes (casting, forging, rolling, drawing) and/or large-scale joining processes (soldering)
  • Ability to translate requirements into verifiable material-property specs under production conditions
  • Experience collaborating with vendors and suppliers; strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with scaling metal/alloy design from R&D to production

Responsibilities

  • Translate performance requirements into verifiable material-property specs for production
  • Identify materials and processes enabling high-volume manufacturing under demanding conditions
  • Select and interpret international materials standards; draft material specs for fusion applications
  • Serve as technical lead for materials development when off-the-shelf options fail
  • Collaborate with design, supply chain, and manufacturing to qualify materials and methods
  • Provide SME for production root-cause analyses and corrective actions
  • Review and report materials data in version-controlled databases
