Job summary

Buildkite is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead Developer Experience, building AI-led loops that boost productivity for ~80 engineers. You’ll own CI, build tooling, codebase health, deployment paths, and the adoption of agentic coding tools.

You’ll ship hands-on changes across languages, drive measurable improvements in engineering velocity, and evangelize cross-team collaboration. This is a fully remote role across Australia, New Zealand, and the USA West Coast.

• Proven track record of shipping production-grade software.
• Experience leading AI and developer tooling initiatives.
• Evidence of making engineering teams measurably faster.
• Exposure to large-scale systems and teams.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end developer experience for ~80 engineers across CI, tooling, and codebase health.
• Lead the initiative to double R&D output per engineer with measurable metrics.
• Ship hands-on changes across multiple languages and services.
• Build credibility and relationships to drive team buy-in and remove roadblocks.
• Advance agentic coding tooling and measure impact across the org.
