Job summary

Buildkite is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead Developer Experience, crafting AI-led development loops that boost engineer productivity. You’ll influence CI, build tooling, and the codebase, shaping deployment paths and tooling that engineers rely on daily.

You will drive a plan to double R&D output per engineer, hands-on, shipping real PRs across various languages. This role is fully remote, welcoming candidates worldwide, with a focus on high-speed, scalable engineering practices.

Qualifications

Senior-equivalent software background with production experience.
Experience leading AI and developer tooling in a platform org.
Evidence of making engineering teams faster with actionable insights.
Exposure to large-scale systems and fast-paced environments.
Fluency across multiple languages and stacks.
Comfort writing code while shaping tooling and processes.

Responsibilities

Own end-to-end developer experience for ~80 engineers, spanning CI, build tooling, and deployment paths.
Lead the initiative to double R&D output per engineer with measurable improvements.
Ship the work hands-on, contributing real PRs across languages and services.
Build credibility and relationships to drive buy-in and remove roadblocks for teams you don’t own.
Evaluate and roll out agentic coding tooling, measure impact, and raise the bar for quality.
