American Express in New York is seeking a Staff Data Engineer – Agentic AI to shape how autonomous AI systems are designed and operated across the enterprise.
You will collaborate with product and UX teams, design core frameworks, write production code, and lead technical decisions without people management responsibilities. This role offers deep architectural influence and broad impact within Amex Tech.
Qualifications
- 10+ years building large-scale distributed systems with ML infrastructure.
- Ownership of cross-cutting agentic systems spanning teams/products.
- Strong fundamentals in backend, APIs, data pipelines and cloud.
- Deep experience with agentic AI stack: planning, tool use, memory, evaluation.
- Fluency in AI-assisted and agentic development workflows.
- Ability to operate in ambiguous problem spaces and ship reliable autonomous systems.
- Ability to influence technical direction without formal authority.
- Experience with workflow engines, async processing, queues and streaming.
Responsibilities
- Drive technical direction for agentic AI initiatives and architecture.
- Build and operate production-grade agentic AI systems.
- Own and evolve shared agentic capabilities and frameworks.
- Lead design reviews and navigate tradeoffs on autonomy, safety and cost.
- Collaborate with product and UX to shape vision for agentic experiences.
- Mentor engineers and raise technical bar in the agentic AI space.
