Job summary

Lightship is seeking a Staff Chassis Systems Design Engineer to own chassis structures and mechanical integrations from concept through production. You will develop manufacturable designs with strong engineering judgment, perform analyses, and drive production release while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

The role demands a deep background in vehicle chassis design, geometry tolerance analysis, and supplier collaboration to ensure robust, cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field; M.S. preferred.
• 8+ years in mechanical/structural design in automotive or related industries.
• Experience from concept through prototype, validation, and production release.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and engineering drawings; CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE preferred.
• Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing/assembly.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop vehicle chassis systems and components from concept through production.
• Translate system requirements into detailed designs meeting strength, stiffness, durability, mass, packaging, serviceability, cost, and manufacturability targets.
• Define load cases and structural load paths; perform static/loading, stress, deflection, fatigue analyses, and safety factors.
• Develop interfaces, mounting strategies, datum structures, tolerances, clearances, and packaging; apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Create, release, and maintain production-quality 3D CAD, drawings, specs, and docs throughout development.
• Select materials and processes (welded/fabricated structures, sheet metal, machining, castings, forgings, extrusions).
• Lead or support design reviews, CAE, DFMEA, PFMEA, tolerance analysis, trade studies, functional analysis.
• Develop and execute DVP&R and validation plans; evaluate test results and implement improvements.
• Support prototype and production builds, troubleshoot fit, function, packaging, manufacturing, and assembly issues.
