Scribd, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Everand Core team to own the backend platform powering discovery, organization, and consumption of books across web and mobile.

You will shape architecture, drive performance, personalization, and reliability while collaborating with search, recommendations, design, and product partners. You’ll mentor engineers, lead architectural direction, raise the bar on testing and ops, modernize legacy systems, and partner with ML teams to deliver

Qualifications

• Significant experience in backend engineering and building scalable distributed systems.
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language (Ruby preferred) such as Ruby, Scala, Go, or Python.
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, defining SLOs, metrics, and debugging distributed systems.
• Proven track record of technical leadership: setting architectural direction and mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for the Everand backend and translate product intent into backend design.
• Own backend reliability and platform health including CI/CD, databases, queues, cost, and observability.
• Mentor engineers, conduct PR reviews, and raise the bar on design, testing, and ops.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML teams to deliver backend systems for experimentation and a single source of truth across platforms.
