Scribd, Inc. in the United States seeks a Staff Software Engineer on the Everand Core team to own the backend platform powering discovery, personalization, and consumption across web and mobile.

You will collaborate across search, recommendations, design, product, and ML partners, drive reliability, observability, and scalable systems, and mentor engineers while shaping technical direction. This role emphasizes user-focused engineering, experimentation, and delivering fast, robust experiences

Qualifications

• Backend experience with distributed systems
• Proficient in at least one modern backend language (Ruby, Scala, Go or Python)
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, and SLOs
• Proven technical leadership and mentorship track record
• Experience collaborating with PM, design, ML teams and cross-functional partners

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for the Everand backend: design docs, architecture reviews, and translate product intent into backend design.
• Own backend reliability and platform health: staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, cost and observability.
• Mentor engineers and promote high design, testing, and ops standards through reviews and pairing.
• Represent the backend in cross-team planning and execution across functions.
• Foster technical excellence, building scalable, resilient, and observable systems while enabling fast delivery.
• Modernize legacy systems and reduce technical debt to improve velocity and scalability.
• Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML to deliver backend systems supporting experimentation and a single source of truth.
• Champion a user-first mindset in backend decisions to enhance reading/listening experiences
