Job summary

Scribd, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Everand Core backend team in the United States. You will own the backend platform powering Everand's discovery, personalization, and consumption experiences, driving performance and reliability across web and mobile.

You will collaborate with search, recommendations, and ML teams, shaping technical direction, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable systems with a user‑first mindset.

Qualifications

• Extensive backend engineering experience with scalable distributed systems.
• Proficient in at least one modern backend language (Ruby preferred, also Scala/Go/Python).
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, and SLOs.
• Proven technical leadership: setting architecture, mentoring, migrations.
• Experience with cross-functional collaboration and architecture reviews.

Responsibilities

• Set backend technical direction and socialize design docs.
• Own backend reliability, CI/CD, databases, queues, and observability.
• Mentor peers, review PRs, and raise team standards.
• Collaborate with product/design/ML to ship backend systems.
• Modernize legacy systems to improve velocity and scalability.
