Job summary

Flex is a NYC-based FinTech redefining rent payments. We seek a Staff Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale services for Payment, Billing, Identity, and partner integrations, setting the long-term technical vision for the systems you own.

You will lead scoping and production deployments while mentoring engineers and collaborating with product, design, and other engineering teams to deliver robust, scalable solutions in small, frequent iterations.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience.
• 6+ years of Java experience.
• Ability to set technical direction and architecture for complex distributed systems.
• Ability to lead and mentor engineers across teams.
• Experience working with globally distributed teams and stakeholders.
• Experience building robust, fault-tolerant systems with external dependencies.
• Designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines.
• Proficiency with Spring, Gradle, JUnit, and JVM performance tuning.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale backend services for payment, billing, identity, and partner integrations.
• Define long-term technical vision and architecture for owned systems.
• Lead scoping, design, and implementation across teams and drive production rollouts.
• Mentor peers and raise engineering quality across the org.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering peers to deliver iterative improvements.
