Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Databases (Relational and Key-Value). You will shape scalable datastore strategies, work with multi-region deployments, and raise the bar for reliability and performance across OLTP and OLAP workloads.

You will collaborate across product, infrastructure, and SRE, design control planes for hundreds of databases, and mentor teammates while promoting quality, ownership, and robust testing.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• 5+ years of hands-on Database Expertise, Relational and/or Distributed SQL such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess.
• Strong knowledge of database fundamentals: schema design, query optimization, sharding, partitioning, and performance tuning.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and align it with business-impacting projects.
• Design and build components of a scalable datastore platform across multi-region deployments.
• Develop control planes for management, self-service, migrations, disaster recovery, sharding and performance tuning for hundreds of databases.
