Job summary

Affirm is seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Databases (Relational and KeyValue). You will influence cross-team initiatives with product, infrastructure, and SRE, designing scalable datastore components for multi-region, high-performance workloads.

You’ll own operations and availability, automate migrations, sharding, and tuning, and advocate for quality and operational excellence through reviews, playbooks, and mentorship.

Qualifications

8+ years building backend systems at scale with Python or Kotlin.
5+ years of hands-on database expertise with MySQL/PostgreSQL.
Strong knowledge of schema design, query optimization and sharding.

Responsibilities

Set technical strategy for the team on a yearly horizon.
Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and SRE teams.
Design and build scalable datastore components for multi-region workloads.
Develop control planes for managing hundreds of databases at scale.
Lead with quality standards, reviews, and on-call readiness.
