Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Databases platform (Relational and KeyValue). You will influence multi-region datastore design, partner with product and SRE teams, and push performance optimizations at scale.

You will lead architecture for hundreds of databases, improve automation, and mentor engineers while working in a remote-first culture across the US.

Qualifications

8+ years designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
5+ years hands-on database expertise with Relational/Distributed SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess).
Experience building highly available distributed systems on AWS, Spark, Kubernetes, and measuring performance.

Responsibilities

Set technical strategy for the team on a yearly horizon and align it with business impact.
Collaborate with product, infrastructure and SRE to deliver scalable datastore components.
Design and build multi-region, horizontally scalable datastore solutions for mission-critical data.
Develop control planes for automated database migrations, disaster recovery, sharding and tuning.
Champion code quality, design standards, reviews, and cross-team knowledge sharing.
