Job summary

ServiceNow in Santa Clara, CA, seeks a Staff Engineer (IC4) to lead design, development, and delivery of complex systems within internal platforms. You will own critical components, set technical direction, and mentor peers, combining strong software fundamentals with hands-on AI-assisted development.

You will own backend services (REST/GraphQL, Kafka), build microservices, and collaborate with TPMs and stakeholders to shape requirements while applying AI tooling and ensuring code quality across

Qualifications

• 8+ years of practical software engineering experience with end-to-end ownership.
• Strong fundamentals: data structures, system design, REST/GraphQL, relational modeling, testing.
• Hands-on microservices experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka).
• Front-end skills with a modern component framework.
• Collaborates with TPMs and stakeholders to clarify requirements.
• CI/CD, containers, observability, and L3 incident/support for internal systems.
• Hands-on agentic workflows, LLM integration, RAG, Knowledge graph, prompt engineering.
• Mentoring engineers and elevating code quality through reviews.
• Nice to have: Billing/quoting/use-based systems experience; Kafka/NoSQL depth; ServiceNow certification.

Responsibilities

• Own backend services end-to-end, including REST/GraphQL APIs and event-driven microservices (Kafka).
• Build and integrate microservices with ServiceNow platform applications and patterns.
• Own a complex subsystem, set direction, and carry operational consequences.
• Contribute to UI work using a modern component framework.
• Collaborate with TPMs and stakeholders to shape requirements and align on trade-offs.
• Apply AI coding tools and agentic workflows with careful review before shipping.
• Provide L3 support for internal business-critical systems.
• Mentor engineers and raise quality through code reviews and scalable design.
• Model best practices in software craftsmanship, testing discipline, and debugging.
